Digital November 2022: Circle

Digital November is an international event of the Institut Francais, and it has been introducing high-quality XR content to the public through collaboration with the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival(BIFAN) since 2020.

Preface

DIGITAL NOVEMBER, The 3rd , is presented by Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and French Embassy. Under the theme of CIRCLE, DIGITAL NOVEMBER will conjure up and showcase  a cluster of reality and virtual reality, art and technology and human in favorable circumstance to embrace experiences that have been unable to be resolved and quietly dispersed in VR headsets
The cinema, which is screened together, leaves the theater and faces the audience in an open space. It's a 21st century simulcast, and the beginning and the end are ambiguous. AI would offer us some of artistic and unorthodox images, and the waves of music and performance will open up the conversation.
As you may have experienced in this July, “stay strange” is okay. Ideal circulation, such a natural phenomenon in a way that would develop an experience into a conversation also the conversation into a gathering and the gathering into a party and the party into an experience, will enhance our sense of art appreciation.
Now we invite you to DIGITAL NOVEMBER2022: CIRCLE’s STRANGE ORBIT and want you to have some creative experiences that come from the moment of realization inspiring us to think about a way of coexistence and the better future.

Digital November 2022
Since 2017, the French Institute and the French cultural network abroad organize Digital November, the international digital cultures festival around the world.                    
Digital November is an invitation to addressthe place of digital cultures in our societies. It increases the awareness of the public to new uses of digital technologies, while discovering the wealthand diversity of digital creations. More than 80 countries and 130 cities on 5 continents will take part in this festival by organizing numerous events to decrypt, create, play, and thinktogether on digital technology in all its forms.
After having settled in Incheon Airport (2020) and Platform-L (2021), the French Embassy in Korea and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) renewed their partnership for the third edition of Digital November in Korea. This year, discover the world of creative and virtual reality at SFactory, Seoul’s cultural hotspot in Seongsu, and dive into the heart of French and Korean digital cultures.
Let's gather around the theme of “the circle”, let’s make culture and immersive content a collective experience rather than an individual one. Let's co-exist, travel through new technologies, virtual reality and across cinema together for an outstanding week.
This project combines the strengths of Korea, a country of rapid adoption of innovative technologies, and France, a land of creation in virtual reality and movies. For years, France has invested massively in the creation of virtual reality content, which has given the country a leading role in this rapidly evolving field. Both countries share a long tradition of cooperation and have in common an ambitious model of support for creation as well as a strong and diversified creative industry.
BIFAN / Beyond Reality team has selected inventive and sophisticated XR contents, that will transport you to a new dimension. Step into Michel Gondry’s dreamy world, travel beyond the boundaries of time and space, immerse yourself in a poetic journey to the heart of architectural utopias, and follow an ex-biologist sent to another planet.
I would like to thank the BIFAN / Beyond Reality and SFactory for allowing us to explore these new universes together. Embark with us on a trip to the intersection of Reality and Virtuality, of Korea and France, of Arts and Technology. I wish you all a wonderful journey.

Why Circle?

Immersive content utilizing VR HMD has been conceived as suitible for personal experience rather than for collective mass experience such as cinema due to its specific hardware requirements. With this year's Digital November, we would like to present a "Circle" which embraces such scattered peronal experience as a metaphor and a main theme of the event.

DIGITAL NOVEMBER 2022: CIRCLE will support a new way of cinema experience with silent disco atmosphere. 3 channels for a double feature screening and music sounds will be on each set of on-site wireless silent disco headphones. Enable to transmit separate frequencies of sounds on on-site wireless silent disco headphones we offer for Screenings and Music at your seat as you want. Cinema and Music, Silent Disco will lead you to a new way of cinema experience.

'Digital November 2022: Circle' has been caused by the thought of how we can coexist technology and art, and people and what kind of future we can unfold. For gathering to awaken our new senses through the moment when technology and art coexist, strange trajectory of 'Digital November 2022: Circle' begins with a performance by French multimedia artist Rémi Klemensiewicz in session 1 and an audio visual performance by sound artist Unknown(MJ) Kim in session 2. Also, As it is a special day when 'Digital November 2022: Circle' is began, our moment continues with DJ's music until 11 p.m. on a pitch-black November night, stays for aftertaste.

Audio Visual Performance
A new language to talk about co-existence with a grammar built on science and arts to begin the days of DIGITAL NOVEMBER 2022:CIRCLE. Rémi Klemensiewicz will trying to find a balance between hidden, suggested melodies and more massive textured atmospheres. Unknown Kim will let sonic waves travel around us and have you to see it by a performance. Last, Bleeps from Emosi will comfort you for a deep november night.

Information

This performance is an experiment with various types of sounds : a coexistence of both electronic and acoustically generated drones (with various instruments including voice). In the performance, the musician is trying to find a balance between hidden, suggested melodies and more massive textured atmospheres. The use of very simple round shaped lights aims to bring attention to the sound generating actions of the performer and how they control this sense of coexistence between musical tones and noise.

Information

<Fragile Lines> is a performance that observes the audiovisual rhythm on the borderline that is intrusive or easily violated. It is an extension of the exploration of the artist who pays attention to the phenomena revealed at the boundary between two different environments, such as artificial/nature, coast/coast, and machinery/living things.
In this performance, Unknown Kim uses 25-year time-lapse satellite images of five locations where sensitive changes in the coastline were observed due to the rising temperature.
And along with the movement of the lines that seem to be connected, the artist herself transforms the sounds she has collected from domestic and foreign shores for two years to compose music.

Biography

Unknown Kim is a sound artist and media researcher based in The Hague and Seoul, mainly exploring the intersection of geography and psychology(Psycho-Geography), researching sounds and music that emerge between environments and artificials.
With work experiences at New York’s Harvestworks, Elephant Space and research experience in ArtScience Interfaculty at The Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague – ‘The other’s sonic experience; Bus 22’, she has been mainly conducting immersive sound performances. She is also working with the latest media technologies, including live coding music performances, AI music performances, and creative coding.
In 2022, along with the Re-Shaping (t)dunes project, which makes musical instruments as coastal infrastructure. And established a non-profit music label Acoustic Territories to continue the practice of environmentally sustainable sound art.In Re-Shaping (t)dunes, Unknown Kim made a wind turbine synthesizer that works with the power of the wind and has the function of preserving dunes, installed and played on the shore.Also, Acoustic Territories has released Acoustic Territories Vol.0, which includes the participants and the field research on sound collection on Jeju Island, and the music produced based on it.

On the last day of ‘Digital November 2022: Circle’, Director Kim Jin moo and PD Kim Kyung sun of <Mind Universe>, who has been familiar with the experience of making imagination to a reality, talks about Imagination with BIFAN XR Programmer Jay Kim.
From 9 p.m., <Let there be light>, a joint performance between France and Korea, unravels the awe of light and imagination of human history.
Through the performance, you can imagine the past gestures of awe of light, and think about how the future light is changing and the resulting gestures have changed.

GOODINSTORY / CEO
After debuting as a producer in 2005 with Mr. Housewife, which humorously breaks down the prejudice of gender roles, this producer is planning and producing projects in a diverse spectrum such as The Youth, which is an omnibus feature film capturing the wandering youths in society, and The ABCs of Our Relationship, which shows the growth and love of three youths. Recently produced SF independent film Mind Universeand A Letter from Galaxy.

Biography

Intertwining music genres and coming from an audio engineering background, K.O.P. 32 has sculpted his own sound identity for the past few years.
K.O.P. 32 loves to create rich and textured atmospheres with precise drums grooves and rich sound design. Layer upon layer, organic compositions materialize into music that feels .
The Parisian born but Seoul based released on underground dance labels such as Hard Beach Entertainment, unveiling him as an expert of trance inducing breakbeat, or renowned classic electro Craigie Knowes, with music that both stays fresh and original whilst maintaining an old-school vibe.  His records have become some of the most sought after by exigent DJs and selectors.
K.O.P. 32 is always challenging himself, launching his own label “Beyond the Bridge” in 2021 with vinyl and tape releases that study faster BPMs and experimental compositions evidencing his deep rooted eclecticism.
